May 31, 2001 - NME: The Lost Art of Keeping a Line-Up
by staff
Queens of the Stone Age have spoken to nme.com about their decision to recruit ex-Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan into their live band.

As previously revealed on nme.com, Lanegan will join the US rockers for a series of UK shows, starting in Norwich on June 2.

Now, speaking in an exclusive interview published in this week's NME, the band have explained how the collaboration came to fruition. Queens mainman Josh Homme said that for the band's sound to develop, the line-up should be transient.

He said: "Other people have torn apart bands we've been in, so the band needs to be slippery and slender. That's why the line-up should move, the music should move. It should be like a phantom. That's why this time we're showing up with Mark.

"I think Mark by nature is a dark person. And I think the dark side of what we do is rooted in being subversive to be happy. Whereas I think he's just fucking dark."

Homme first worked with Lanegan in 1996 when hired as a touring guitarist in the Screaming Trees. Lanegan said that he joined Queens because "it's a lot easier to let someone else be Caesar".

"I've never been in charge, I'm just a lazy bastard," Lanegan joked. Speaking about his time with the Screaming Trees, he described it as like being with his "family".

He continued: "I had a lot of fun with those guys, but I was with them for 14 years longer than my longest love affair, so that's way too fucking long. Hanging out with the Trees is like hanging out with your family, and I hardly ever see my family. Hanging out with these guys [Queens] is like hanging out with your pals. And I'll just be waking up by the time it's done."
