Songs for the Deaf Goes GOLD in the US Propelled by No One Knows, which can't be described as anything but a hit, Songs for the Deaf reached the 500,000 mark in sales in January 2003, making it QOTSA's first gold record in the US, much to the delight of Interscope's suits. The Concept "...[T]he album begins in taxing Los Angeles traffic before ending 120 miles later in the serene desert of Joshua Tree, California. It's a drive that Homme has made more times than he can even remember. 'When I'd do it I didn't have a stereo, all I had was a radio,' he recalls. 'And it goes into weird religious stations and really bad, bad music on that trip through the middle of nowhere. So I used to really enjoy the silence and then every once in a while the station you were at would all of a sudden let out a screech and become a new station. I just wanted to bring that to a record somehow.'" - read the rest of it The Hidden Tracks The Real Song for the Deaf and Feel Good Haha of the Summer (no, that's not it's official name) are hidden on the cd. To hear the first one, rewind the first track to -1:35. The track begins with "Huh? What?" at -1:33. To hear the second one, just let track 13 (Song for the Deaf) keep playing and the hidden song will start at 5:45. Although it's listed as a "hidden track" on the back of the cd, Mosquito Song is not actually hidden, as it has its own track number. However, there is -30 seconds on the track before the song starts, so if you're listening to the cd without changing the tracks, there will be 30 seconds of silence between Feel Good and Mosquito Song. If you're changing the tracks, the song starts immediately when you hit play on track 14. The Real Song for the Deaf Ever wonder what the noise is? Nick explains: "Really, there IS a hidden song for deaf people. We got an organisation of deaf people to rub balloons against the mic at such a low frequency that they could feel it. Turn up your speakers at home and you'll, ah, hear it!" God is in the Radio backwards What's Mark saying during the quiet part of God is in the Radio? Find out for yourself [the mp3 is down right now]. Thanks to SkullGreensteam for running the song backwards and sharing it with us! Demos In June/July 2002 the Songs for the Deaf demos showed up. These songs may come from the recording session the band did with Eric Valentine in October/November 2001. They are: You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, but I Feel Like a Millionaire (rougher version) No One Knows (flute and an orchestra in the chorus, no guitar solo, "walrus meat" is whispered at the end (a la Desert Sessions Monsters in the Parasol), and a piano chord ends the song) Do It Again (with alternate lyrics and a different drum part) Go with the Flow (slightly rougher version with a shaker added to the end) God is Radio (first guitar solo has no reverb; ends with the drum fade out (no reverb) instead of spooky effects) First It Giveth (slightly rougher version with a slower tempo; Josh says "cool" instead of "cruel") Another Love Song (no differences) Hangin Tree (no differences) Song for the Deaf (instrumental, except for some background screams) Mosquito Song (Josh's vocals are softer, the guitar solo is slightly different, and the guitar tracks aren't played by Alain Johannes) The Promotional Story The band released a promotional bio in the form of a lurid comic book. It came with some pre-orders of Songs for the Deaf. Read it here. The clean version The clean edition comes with censored versions of Six Shooter and Song for the Deaf (for the line "The blind can go get fucked"). Japanese Edition The Japanese edition has Everybody's Gonna Be Happy [The Kinks], The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret (live), and Gonna Leave You in Spanish as bonus tracks. Taiwanese Edition The Taiwanese version is German in origin and is the same as the standard European version, but the yellow overlay has a mistake in it: "You Think U Ain't Worth a Dollar, but I Feel Like a Millionaire." See scan below. Argentina Edition The Argentina version comes with a CD booklet and not a leaflet. French Limited Edition 2 Disc The French version is a limited edition version issued in 2003. It comes with an extra disc which contains the No One Knows video and the making of the video. This extra disc comes in a paper sleeve. How many copies it's limited to is currently unknown. Tour Edition The European tour edition is the regular album, plus Everybody's Gonna Be Happy and a bonus disc with five songs from the Nov. 1, 2002 show at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. It was released to coincide with the 2003 European Summer Tour, which started in Italy on June 2. The Aussie tour edition is the regular album, plus Everybody's Gonna Be Happy and a bonus disc with five songs from the Nov. 1, 2002 show at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. It was released to coincide with the 2004 Australian tour. The full Ancienne Belgique show in Brussels was recorded and broadcasted by Studio Brussels. You can easily find it on Soulseek. The Vinyl It's supposedly limited to 3000 copies. Here's the track breakdown of the Interscope version: [A] You Think I Ain´t worth A Dollar But I Feel Like A Millionaire No One Knows First It Giveth A Song For The Dead [B] The Sky Is Fallin' Six Shooter Hangin´ Tree Go With The Flow Gonna Leave You (Spanish Version) [C] Do It Again God Is In The Radio Another Love Song [D] A Song For The Deaf Mosquito Song (Hidden Track) The Lost Art Of Keeping A secret (Live Troubadour 2002/UK Bonus Track) Everybody´s Gonna Be Happy The art is the same as on the standard CD version, but the colours are reversed (what's black is red and vice versa). Ipecac's Vinyl Ipecac's much-anticipated Songs for the Deaf vinyl was released in late July 2003 after long delays. It's a double LP on clear red vinyl with a black gatefold sleeve and it has lyrics to all of the songs except for Bloody Hammer. The initial pressing of the vinyl is numbered IPC-41, the same number as Mondo Generator's A Drug Problem That Never Existed. This is thought to be merely a misprint. The real number is IPC-43. Song listing for this vinyl will be here soon. The DVD The DVD is limited to 200,000 copies. Two different versions of the DVD are out there: a US version and a UK/AUS version. The difference between the two is that the US DVD has four live songs and a bunch of extra footage from live shows and the studio, and the UK/AUS DVD has five live tracks. Here's the breakdown: US Tracklist: 1. Monsters in the Parasol (live at the Troubadour, March 7, 2002) plus live, tour, and studio footage 2. No fight between Josh and Hunter S. Thompson at a birthday party. Nothing else. Who Sings What Here ya go, a guide to who's singing on which songs, meant to clear up any confusion. Blag Dahlia - DJ Kip Kasper from KLON radio John Gove, Kevin Porter, and Brad Kintscher - horns on Mosquito Song Dean Ween Clarifies Things Since there is some debate over which songs Dean plays guitar on, here's his post from ween.com: "We've been getting a really surprising amount of email regarding our contributions to the new Queens of The Stone Age CD. Since the credits on the record are slightly vague (kinda like Ween records) the tracks that I played guitar on are: Six Shooter, I'm Gonna Leave You, and the Mosquito Song. This record seems to be getting a really major push by the label, but for ONCE it is rightly deserved. If you haven't heard this awesome record, go check it out, it really is the shit." Producer Eric Valentine produced the first cut of the album in late 2001. The band didn't like it, so they got Chris Goss to help them produce it themselves in 2002. From the Masters of Reality site (News update April 20): Goss has also been doing quite a bit of guitar and vocal recording along with Dave Grohl on new songs being cut for the still unfinished QOTSA LP "Songs for the Deaf". The Queen's have broken off their relationship with producer Eric Valentine...creative differences. Whatever the squabble was, we know that QOTSA did the right thing. Chris touts the new lp, "I've never heard anything like it. Homme wants his dick sucked, and he deserves it. As a matter of fact, so do I." The DJs C-Minus - ?
